BSF* Play Dough
Ingredients:
2 cups water
Food coloring of your choice (use about 22 drops)
3 Tablespoons vegetable oil
2 1/2 cups flour
1 Tablespoon powdered alum (in spice aisle or purchased in drug store)
1/2 cup salt
Instructions:
Bring to a boil: water, food coloring, oil.
Mix together separately in large bowl: flour, alum, salt.
Pour boiling water mixture over flour. Mix, cool slightly, and knead well. Store in airtight container or plastic bag. It will keep for a long time. A drop or two of oil of cinnamon (or other flavors) keeps it smelling fresh. Sometimes it is fun to use different flavors for different colors: red—cinnamon, green—mint, yellow—clove, blue—wintergreen. The flavors tempt some children to taste the dough, so be alert to avert such taste tests!
*BSF=Bible Study Fellowship. My friend Janet Cromer shared this recipe with me. It is much smoother and less grainy than the old original homemade play dough recipe.

I received this recipe from a children’s leader back in 1995. I made it using wonderful colors with gel colors for cake decorating throughout my children’s childhoods. Now I’m making it for my grandchildren!!
I tried this using boiling water from a kettle and needed to add a lot more flour prior to and during the kneading. Batch 2 I cut the water to 1.5 cups and the oil to 2 T and it came out much closer to the desired texture, but still added a little more flour in kneading.
